Summary
Evening comes as the Imperial City glows through lantern light. The city shines like a jewel, with strings of lights adorning the buildings. Xing at nighttime is a sight to behold. The garden is still, enveloped in darkness, as Ling climbs out his chamber window. He’s dressed plainly in all black, minus the Sun Wukong mask on his face. Lan Fan appears before him like an apparition as he’s about to clear the imperial gate.
“Where do you think you’re going, my liege?” she asks sternly, startling Ling. Once he regathers his wits, he tries to charm himself out of being caught, hoping she falls for his plan.

Ling desperately wants to reconnect with Lan Fan after ascending the throne, who has been pulling away from him. Perhaps the new year provides the opportunity he seeks.
