“I knew you,” Tommy said finally, voice barely above a whisper. “Before.”
Buck’s stomach twisted. “Before… what?”
Tommy exhaled slowly, looking down at his hands. “Before this.”
Silence stretched between them.
“That doesn’t make sense,” Buck murmured, though the words felt hollow.
Tommy’s lips twitched in something that wasn’t quite a smile. “Doesn’t it?”
Buck opened his mouth to argue—but he couldn’t. The ache in his chest when Tommy called him Evan—like he’d been waiting for years to say it.
“Why don’t I remember?” Buck’s voice was quieter now, almost afraid of the answer.
Tommy’s expression softened, his eyes filled with something Buck couldn’t quite name. “Because you weren’t supposed to.”
