"She writes him few letters that year. They are polite, proper, correct. She tells him the major news of the village, the widely-known gossip about the lives of her sisters, expresses honest but overly simplified wishes that he come home safe.
They are open, honest with each other about all but one thing (the most important thing) in person, but for some reason, a letter, which should free her to write as she wishes, without fear of watching the immediate consequences, has the opposite effect. She's more guarded, more careful to conceal. She fills them with platitudes because somehow, she's afraid committing even the tiniest portion of the truth to paper will force her to acknowledge it."

He whispers continually, reassuring me, reminding me to keep breathing. It lasts for what feels like the length of forever. His body atop of mine, one of his hands holding tight to my own, his fingers threaded through mine. It is comforting, it feels like the reassurance of his words, strong, trying to keep me grounded. But then there is noise, crashing and footsteps, his body leaves, the warmth of him disappears, I miss it instantly. I want it back.

And there is a whole list of stuff she'd never do, no way, not even at gunpoint. The list got as big as she did, and, well, she stuck to it... mostly. Occasionally. Except, turns out, she botched half of them. But only because along the way, she started seeing this moral gray zone—no right, no wrong, just... human. Had some pretty immature takes on abortion before she had one at fifteen—guess she changed her mind, alright?
Swore she'd never let feelings mess with work, but then there was Doyle... and, well, it got pretty messed up. Whatever, it happens. Said she'd never sleep with a married guy. Until, you know, she really, really wanted to.
Screw the gray line—this was a blazing red, screaming do not cross, turn back now, don't even think about it line. Wrong.
