Oh. Luffy laughs at his slack-jawed surprise, laughing and laughing and—oh. There’s an infectious joy to his whole-body laughter, an irresistible charm to the edge of his D-shaped grin. It’s Captain’s smile. It’s Captain’s joy, his freedom, his words. Shanks is hungover; he’s seeing double; he’s hallucinating; he’s fourteen and his Captain is the freest man in the world; he’s fifteen and this boy is throwing his words out into the wind as they break free into the open ocean. A frayed breath catches in his throat at the sound of Luffy's laugh.

The words echo in Ace's head like a mantra, inescapable and horrifying. Three words that are worse than anything Impel Down had thrown at him so far, worse than the jeers and the torture, worse than the seastone exhaustion and the knowledge of his impending death.
Gramps says the words with a finality that tells Ace he is not going to do anything, that he's not even going to try and help Lu' even if he is the baby of the family, even if he doesn't deserve this - even if he wasn't born with cursed blood in his veins.
He wants to rage, wants to pull on the shackles until there's nothing left, shatter them into smithereens - he can't, his haki never got good enough to do more than the most basic protection, Marco had been right he had been relying on his devil fruit -
In Sabaody, Kuma is too slow to send Luffy away as well and the Strawhat Captain is slated for execution alongside Firefist Ace when news of his parentage breaks out. Unfortunately for the World Government, they had failed to take into consideration exactly who would be willing to raise hell in order to save his life.
