Steve taught her the lesson the first time they met.
“You know, I can’t imagine it. Being an Avenger.” Annie confessed. She speared a piece of pineapple on her long-stemmed fork and dragged it lazily through the chocolate. “I mean, how do you do it?”
Steve shrugged. “Its not as hard as you’d think.” He said. “It’s a lot like being a soldier.”
Annie shook her head. “No, I don’t mean-“ she hesitated, “I don’t mean the fighting. I understand that. What I don’t get is how you know.” She said pointedly, looking sincerely baffled. “The Avengers… you, how do you know which calls to make? From the stories I’ve heard from Ms Potts…” she stopped again, a slight frown creasing her brow. “I just don’t know if I would be able to know what the right decision was, in the moment, you know?”
“It’s-“ Steve tried to hunt for the right words. “Like I said. Its easier than you think.” Annie raised an eyebrow and he leaned forward. “No, really. The way I see it, in the moment you find the guy tryin’ to hurt people and… and you just have to ask yourself one thing. What does this guy want to do? You ask that and then you do your best to get in the goddamned way.”
She takes it to heart.
