Summary
At the beginning, their revenge plan had been an easy, three-step thing.
Step one: Compile all the information they had about Master Xehanort's plans, and the general happenings of the future.
Step two: Figure out the best point in time in which to stop the bastard, and find out how to actually kill him based on that. Do that preferably before he could get too powerful, or shit really hit the fan.
Step three: Profit.
Considering how Vanitas's life had been going so far, he hadn't been particularly surprised when they already hit a roadblock on step one.
Vanitas and Meliora are finally reunited, ready to get down to business and get their revenge, prepared with knowledge from the future and pure, unadulterated spite. It should be easy. It very much is not.

„If you can't be trusted to listen to simple orders,“ Master Xehanort had said, voice tight and ice cold, „I will need to make sure that you obey.“
After the mess Vanitas made of things during his trip to Monstropolis, Master Xehanort, in an attempt to stop him from disobeying any more orders, ordered Vanitas to stick around one of the other Organization members at all times. The choice of who he went with was left up to him.
Weighing his options and deciding to go with the least awful one, Vanitas decides to go and bother the replica with his presence.
