"What happened to you?” Astrid asked, her voice was cold.
Hiccup's brows knit in confusion.
She knew what happened to him, she was literally there. There for it and for everything after. Until he left.
When he just blinked a few times, perplexed, instead of responding, she went on.
“You used to be smart! You used to be funny! You used to be worth talking to!” As her voice raised with each word, there was a hollow ache in his chest. It felt like something heavy was pushing down on it, forcing all the air out of his lungs.
The worst part, he thought, was the fact she was right.
Nothing he did made sense anymore.
At some point in his brief stint away from Berk something in him, something that had been steadily growing over the years, seemed to finally reach a breaking point and irreversibly shifted.
He was meant to be some kind of genius, right? That was the whole point of–
He was useless, wasn't he?

One thing Ash knew for sure– he'd never be a coward again. It was his job to help others. He wouldn't try to run away or even complain next time he was faced with a challenge. He'd get the job done, save those who need saving. He wasn't a little kid who cried when being picked to save the world by a Legendary, anymore. He was the Chosen One. He had to be mature and help people. He was The Hero.
