“I clocked you twenty minutes ago,” Bucky tells him, and Steve startles badly. “Then Kyla said there was 'some sad-eyed creeper at the bus stop cosplaying Captain America' and I figured I ought to head out here. What does 'cosplaying' mean?”
Steve makes a noise of strangled indignation. “I'm not even wearing the suit,“ he finally manages.
Across the street, a teenage girl glowers at Steve from a third-floor window. She's wearing a t-shirt with a picture of Angela Davis on it, and an expression of extreme distrust.

Fury’s voice is very, very soft when he replies. “Watch yourself, Captain.”
“Keep the shield. Keep the costume, give it to the next guy you run up the flagpole. Bucky and I will disappear, find a beach on the other side of the globe and live out our days in peace.” There’s bitterness, there at the end.

“He really didn't,” Natasha confirms.

Steve’s reunion fantasies are endless and varied: Sometimes he and Bucky fight, back to back, against a nest of Hydra goons. Sometimes Bucky says Shame about the Dodgers, eh? and cuffs Steve on the back of the head. Most of them end with Steve sobbing noisily into Bucky’s Kevlar.
