He was sitting at Ellison’s desk (where else would he be?) half looking like a professor, (his hair pulled back, a blue blazer thrown over the back of the chair) half looking like Peter Pan desperate to find his shadow. He stared down at the papers in front of him for a good twenty seconds, took five to glance over his shoulder then started over again. There was no question what he was looking for, but what he wasn’t looking for was me.

He looked over his shoulder at the shore and his sentinel sight seemed to work backward. Instead of zooming in to see Sandburg under the beach umbrella reading, somehow the land was impossibly far away, miles and miles. When he glanced down at the water that his conscious mind knew was only six feet deep, the irrational voice in his head told him it went forever.
