That night was a rushed job. Temari had to fight her muscles shaking as she slid into her sleeves. When her hair was finally tied back with a single ribbon, Temari took off towards the door to her bedroom, slippered feet scuffing against the rug. Her handmaids followed, matching her stiff posture. She did not hesitate in her quick step, although she dreaded each one she took. Dawdling would only make it worse. Other servants were rushing to and fro, frantically lighting candles on the walls. Temari could hear the sound of her father’s voice echoing from the living room as she descended the stairs from the second floor.

"Yeah.. well, so are summers in this town," he replied, nudging her again to lighten the mood.
"What if we don't just stay friends?" Powder hesitated, scooting a little closer to him as her voice dropped into a whisper. "What if we.. I don't know. What if we get married some day?"
Ekko blinked at her, caught off guard. "Married?"
"Uh.. yeah,"she said, her cheeks flushing pink. "You know, like grown-ups do. We could have a house with a big tree in the yard, and.. and maybe a dog. And I'd never put mayo on your sandwiches."
He laughed again, but it was softer this time, almost shy. "You're.. serious?"
Powder nodded, her eyes earnest. "You're my best friend, Ekko. I don't want to lose you, ever."
For a moment, Ekko didn't know what to say—the weight of her words settled over him, heavier than anything he had ever felt before. Finally, he grinned and stuck out his pinky finger. "Alright then. Let's make a promise."
Powder's face lit up as she linked her pinky with his. "Promise?"
"Promise," he said, and they both giggled as the streetlight buzzed faintly above them, and the stars watched silently as they etched their vow into the fabric of that warm summer night.
