The woman considered this. She nodded, though it seemed mostly to herself.
“Okay, uh, what do you want to know?”
“To start, your name,” Zosia said. “And then maybe, I don’t know, why you’re here, what you do, a fun fact about yourself, things like that.”
The woman gave her an incredulous look.
“You wanna do fucking icebreakers right now?”

Zosia gets unplurbed, and Carol has to be the guide through this insanity that she wishes she had while trapped in a one bedroom apartment and being probably madly in love with her.

But when Zosia shows up dressed as Raban, the seductive pirate from her own book, Carol discovers there’s only so much she can do to deny the pull she feels toward the woman who fights to keep her individuality even while connected to the collective mind.

Carol feels the confusion slip onto her face. Nervousness creeps up her spine again. “Me?”
“I know everything that anybody has ever thought about you, Carol. Every memory. Every feeling. Helen. Your ex-girlfriends. Your dentist. It’s like I have a Carol encyclopedia in my head.”
Carol had thought that she was done experiencing fresh horrors. What a nightmare it is to realize that she is not. “Oh, god.” She says.
“Oh, god,” Zosia agrees.
After they manage to break Zosia free of the hive, Zosia and Carol try to navigate the field of landmines that is their relationship.

“Fuck, Zosia, come on. That’s right. That’s it. Fuck.” The talking is something Zosia should have corrected earlier on, but hadn’t—her fault. The fact that they’re repeating this mistake over and over again, like a fucked up, horny groundhog’s day—also, at least partially, her fault.

Zosia waits for a few days for Carol to admit the error of her ways before remembering that Carol is one of the most obstinate people on the planet and had probably resisted the virus by sheer willpower alone. She maintains a vague sort of anger at her even if she doesn’t always understand about what. This shit always used to work on Jamie, and for lesser offenses.

“Different from her.” The her in question doesn’t need to be elaborated upon. Carol exhales out of her nose.
“Zosia, this conversation is—”
“Is what? You said you wanted to help me feel better. This would help me feel better.” Is Zosia seriously getting jealous of herself right now? This might be a new low in a season of lows.
