   “You met Harge. And you're surprised someone would try to kill him?” Therese asked, watching the police officer through her sunglasses.

   He glared out at a boat sailing on the lake, his arms crossed. “...I’m surprised it was you,” he explained.

   After several moments of silence, Therese sipped her lemonade, the ice clinking in her crystal glass.

   He turned his glare on her. “Don’t you have anything to say?” he demanded as he pulled out his handcuffs.

   Therese considered it for a few moments, eyes darting between him, his handcuffs, and his holster. She raised her glass and toasted, “Happy Fourth of July.”
