Summary
“If you’re going to keep showing up like this, I’ve laid out some ground rules.” Madeline slid a contract a few inches over the desktop toward the woman, finally looking to meet her eyes sharply. “First of all, you never meet me here again.”
Verna’s fingertips landed on the top page curiously, but her eyes never left Madeline’s. A beat or two passed before Verna’s gaze drifted down to the papers. She picked them up, flipped through them. Madeline watched closely. That was half the point, after all. To watch.
What Madeline saw was an expression of delight.

Summary
“You are not taking good enough care of yourself,” Caitlyn starts, looking towards the fountain. She’s lost weight and her cheeks are hollowed, the knuckles of her hand too pronounced into Vi’s grasp. “I need you now, more than ever, Violet.”
“You have me,” Vi says, as a matter of fact. As if she has anyone else to live for, to give her loyalty to. “In any way you’d want me.”

Summary
“I used to braid Pow-or Jinx, or, well—she was Powder then…” Vi stuttered. She stopped braiding for a second. Caitlyn didn’t move, but she didn’t tense like she once did at the very mention of the name. Vi shook her head and resumed braiding. “I used to braid my sister’s hair when we were little. It wasn’t this long, certainly wasn’t as long as when you knew her. She wanted to grow it out but it annoyed her whenever she could feel it all over her neck.” Vi reached the end of the braid in Caitlyn’s hair. She studied it for a second. It looked pretty good for a braid to sleep in. It wasn’t crooked, at least, and the sections were neat. She banded off the end of it.
Caitlyn turned around. She pulled the braid over her shoulder to observe it, unconsciously running her hands over it. She looked up at Vi after a moment and tilted her head. Opened her mouth, then closed it and pursed her lips.
“Does this have anything to do with why you really don’t want me to cut my hair?”

Summary
The whole concept of her is foreign and enigmatic, and Marisa wants to pull her apart and study her beneath a chemist's microlens; she wants to distill her virtue into discreet molecules that can be classified and indexed and mimicked. She wants to dissect and possess every inch of her mystery until she understands that fearlessness too.
