It was another lonely night, but devastatingly quiet. Mikasa’s fingers clawed into her own arms as she walked down the hall, hating herself for how much she wanted the sound of the Rumbling back because at least then, she knew where the titans were.
Now, she didn’t.
They were somewhere else. Moving along. Marching off to maim and massacre. It was quiet out there – so quiet.
She wanted to be beside Jean again, feel him there, and it made her feel weak and stupid and lost, and Mikasa hated feeling weak and stupid and lost, but sitting on his bed last night, and feeling her dear friend be so near, not even an inch from her own skin, had been more relieving than she could have hoped.

Instead of spending one night in Shiganshina alone, such that canon suggests, both the Rumbling and Armin and Connie's journey take multiple days, leaving Jean and Mikasa without anyone except each other. This extended time leaves room for many things to grow, including unexplored feelings, implications for their country, and the volatile suspicion from dangerous Yeagerists who threaten both of their safety.
