Summary
Prince Evan, affectionately known as Buck, is the heir his parents never wanted. He’s abandoned all royal duties in favor of throwing outlandish parties and expensive vacations. Unfortunately, after his father steps down, Buck has to fulfill two of his most hated royal duties — kingship and marriage.
OR:
When Buck meets Eddie, he decides the surest way to anger his parents and the council is to marry a kitchen cook. When Eddie meets Prince Evan, he wants to know whether it would be considered treason to push a prince off of the nearest cliff.

Summary
“You know what I hate the most?” Buck asked, voice small, eyes glistening as they met Eddie’s. “That it’s not hard for me to believe you could’ve moved on so quickly. Because when we broke up…Eddie... you didn’t even fight for us.”
The words detonated in Eddie’s chest, a sudden destruction that stole his breath. His mouth fell open, breath caught somewhere between protest and apology. Did I even have the right?
“Maybe I’m just a hopeless romantic,” Buck said with a cynical laugh, “but you didn’t even argue. Didn’t offer us a grace period. Like you were one foot out the door, and all you needed was that final nudge from me. You didn’t even look back.”
“But hey,” he said, voice raw and wrecked, “good to finally know where we stand. Eddie Diaz is doing good, ladies and gentlemen,” Buck said with a wry, self‑mocking edge to his voice. “Guess he didn’t love me as much as I loved him.”

Summary
His reflection is pallid, eyes dull. He’s lost weight, and somehow didn’t notice it until he looked in this mirror eight hundred miles away from the one he’s looked in every day for months. He notes that he’s split his lip open chewing on it, but his body doesn’t move to wipe that blood away. He shaved with Buck’s razor this afternoon before he put his funeral suit on, the one Buck bought for him despite his admittedly weak protestations, and he nicked the wing of his jaw. He was right earlier. The circles beneath his eyes are dark as plumbs.
There is something wrong with him.
Eddie tugs the sleeves of Buck’s sweatshirt down over his stiff hands before he goes back to bed, so at least if he starts bleeding again he won’t ruin Buck’s nice soft sheets.

Summary
Captain Buckley’s face creases, his expression disfavourable. “I’m, uh, not really into the whole Sir thing,” he tells Eddie, scratching along the slope of his grey-stubbled chin. “Still getting used to being called Cap, if I’m being honest. Most people here just call me Buck.”
“Buck?” Eddie repeats the name with the intonation of a question.
“There were three other Evans in my class at the Academy,” Captain Buckley explains, shrugging casually with the huge mountain range of his wide, wide shoulders. “Even after all these years, it’s managed to stick.”
OR: Eddie's probationary firefighter year at the 118, under the watchful eye and expert tutelage of Fire Captain Evan Buckley.

Summary
“You—you saved me,” he says, leaning forward to touch the jut of Buck’s elbow. Buck’s eyes flick to him, fast and predatory, from the corner of his vision. “How did you know where I was?”
Buck scoffs. “Because I could smell it on you, Eddie,” he explains. “Three weeks ago you walked into the station smelling like iron and moss. Like wet stone. Humans don’t smell that way on their own.”
Humans. Buck says it like he doesn’t count himself among them. What would he call himself, then? Eddie finds himself too nervous to ask. “So you… you followed me?”
Buck doesn’t respond, but his gaze remains fixed and pointed, his mouth pressed into a firm line. Finally, after what feels like forever, he says, “you don’t understand what you are.”
Eddie swallows. It’s an eerily similar sentiment to the one Alex had made, just before he had sunk his teeth into Eddie’s warm and waiting flesh. In all my years on this earth, I never imagined I’d find a jewel as rare as you.
