There was once a great and splendid castle within the deepwoods.
A different palace to the tale before: white as snow and old in its history, richer still in all things. Yet it sat just as empty and just as lonely. Briars ribbed its outer walls and within soot stained the upholstery. Haunting its halls was a young man, white as the stone and ghosts both. His name was long and tedious and grating, and so we shall call him Percival.
--Once upon a time fox-woman-dreaming, or the fox-wife, left her ungrateful husband when he bemoaned the musk about her paws. What they never tell you is of what happened after: to her foxcub twins, and the cursed castle they found deep in the briarwoods.

“One.” She counts as she goes, setting the squirming kitten down gently.
“Two.” She’s smiling, now, and with the adrenaline beginning to fade Percy feels he can too.
“Three - oh, sweetie, you’re still damp.” Her face becomes something heartbreaking at the realization.
“Four - and five.” He hands her the last one, hand trembling almost as much as it is.
Five kittens. All squirming, to some degree or another - none still, at least. Two at least are whimpering, doing their best to knead at the nearest soft thing. Another is pushed over by its siblings and wails. Percy slowly tips it back upright.--
When the stray Percy had been feeding surprises him with a litter dumped in his workshop, there's really only one person he thinks to turn to for help.

The lady, scared of nothing and knowing full well this castle was not where it was supposed to be, for the woods were as familiar as her twins’ face, set off to investigate."
