Summary
Alex was the most irritating person Andrew had ever met, with his easy compliance, stupid face, and suspiciously well-thought-out plan for running away after accidentally killing a rotten Soc, but Andrew kept finding himself by Alex’s side anyway.
-
Alex (or Abram—the secret name the boy whispered to Andrew one night) is the new kid at Andrew's school, and Andrew is partnered with him for an English project about The Outsiders: Andrew and Abram have to come up with a runaway plan that would work out better than Johnny and Pony's. They think the project is utterly pointless at first, but it turns out to be a lot more useful than they ever would have expected when, less than two months later, Andrew and Abram find themselves with blood on their hands. -

Summary
"Can I try?"
It's a surprising question, though Andrew doesn't let the emotion show on his face, and he sits up from his position on the bed to get a better look at Neil. When he'd first lit up, Neil had been nervous, unfamiliar with the drug and its effects, so he didn't bother offering any to him. He knew firsthand that Neil didn't like feeling out of control, and the fact that he's drinking around the Foxes now is enough of a show of trust that Andrew didn't want to push it.
That doesn't mean Andrew isn't interested in seeing Neil high, though.
Neil smokes for the first time, but not before giving Andrew his "yes."
