Verso knows his soul is not original to him. A stitched-up, fractured, and glued-together thing, stained with memories not his own and heavy with the grief of unimaginable loss. His very existence is a farce, a tragedy played out in canvas and ink. He wants nothing so much as to end it. Emma pours herself a glass and immediately takes a swig. Her face looks hollow in the dimming light of March.
“It was the second one,” she continues, pressing hard fingers onto the bridge of her nose. “I get to this huge fucking manor, and this lady opens the door, looking down on me like I’m dirt on the bottom of her shoe, right? Refusing to let me in, telling me nothing in there is my business, the works. You know it’s bad when they won’t let you in.”
In which Emma is a social worker, Gustave is a teacher and Alicia learns to live.
