You met Rafayel after a stormy day, tangled between the rocks where the sea had thrown him.
Since then, he had been the kind of friend who filled your summers with small miracles. When you were with him, the world always seemed a little brighter, full of color and soft music that vibrated in your chest when he hummed. Sometimes he would skim his hand across the water and show you how rainbows could bloom over the surface. The shoreline was always a little more magical when Rafayel was near.
At least, it had been that way once.
Until the summer you graduated from high school.
Until the evening you told him you would be leaving for college.
After that, something in him changed.
Rafayel grew quiet in a way that didn’t belong to him. He stopped coming to your window to sing. The sea stayed dark and ordinary without the rainbows he used to paint across its surface just for you.
And he never, not even once, spoke about the night the two of you spent together in the little cove, beneath the glow of the strawberry moon.

But the sheer amount of attention he’s given you. The time. “You’re not really getting anything out of this. Not if you don’t put it on exhibit.”
There’s a pause in the rhythm of his sketching. “Ma petite muse,” Rafayel purrs, the endearment dripping with amusement. "Are you asking me why I ‘do’ art?”
