Summary
Reviewing crime-related CCTV footage is not one of Tom’s favourite duties as a cop. Most are boring, petty crimes, while some are… hard to watch.
The one left on his desk today is the footage of a bakery. According to the attached report, the young man working there was verbally abused and physically assaulted by his ex while he was closing the shop. What Tom doesn’t know yet, is that the victim is in fact Jake Hamilton, the guy he has been ghosting for almost 2 years.

“The paramedics are here, Tom. It’s going to be okay, Jake’s going to be okay,” Ashley repeated, kneeling by his side and gently rubbing his back. Despite her comforting words, tears welled up in her own eyes.
Tom couldn’t hear her. He stood frozen, clutching his now empty arms around himself, unable to breathe, unable to think, surrendering to the pain coursing through his body as he crouched down and wept.
