Anthony tucked the new pages carefully into his coat. Newton, now satisfied with his morning mischief, rolled onto his back on the rug and gazed up at them like the picture of innocence he very much was not.
Kate looked down at him, then up at her husband. “You know, you could be a little more affectionate with him.”
“I am affectionate enough. I give him food, water and shelter. What else does he need?”
She arched a brow. “And the way you kiss his head when you think no one’s watching?”
Anthony flushed to the tips of his ears. “That’s between me and the hellspawn.”
Kate laughed and tugged him down for a kiss. “Go now. Or you’ll be late.”
“I’ll be back in an hour,” he promised. “Do not let him near the study again. God knows what else he’ll eat.”

“Ridiculously so,” she admitted, her voice trembling.
Anthony leaned back just enough to look at her, his eyes brimming with love. “I hope my letters helped.”
“They did,” she said, laughing softly as tears slipped down her cheeks. “But nothing compares to having you here.”
He kissed her then, slow and sweet, as if to make up for every moment they’d been apart. When they finally parted, he rested his forehead against hers.
“I’m never leaving you again,” he promised.
Kate smiled, her heart full. “You’d better not. I’m keeping all your notes, just in case.”

“I know,” he replied with a grin, resting his chin on her shoulder. “But you love me anyway.”
