    He felt sick. Breathing was pain. His heart was still beating. He wanted to throw up onto Valjean’s clothes. Valjean pulled him closer, and the man was shivering—it was a warm night, but the waters were still freezing, and he could feel the chill from the waters seeping into his bones. He supposed it wasn’t that different for Valjean, who was shaking in his underclothes, and he smelled of the sewers and the Seine and the worst things on earth and Javert wanted to spit onto his face. Wanted to curse the man for bringing him back to the land of living instead of letting him die for good, because what was Javert if not better dead than alive?

    Yet he was alive. He was breathing, his heart was beating, and he was alive, alive, alive.
