Vi frowned when the doorbell of the Last Drop rang. It was still morning – too early even for the Zaunites to start their drinking and gambling. She set down the whiskey glass she was polishing, then turned and called, “Vander?”
Her adoptive father’s heavy footsteps echoed through the stairway, indicating his journey from the basement. “The whiskey glasses go under the counter, Vi!”
“That’s not what I’m asking about,” Vi huffed when Vander reappeared with a case of beer. “Someone’s outside.”
Vander shrugged. “Go open it. We’re expecting someone.”
Vi frowned, her hand coming to rest on the doorknob. “Who–?”
Her question was cut short when a blur of blue burst in the moment the door cracked open, throwing itself over her. “Vi!”
