Summary
"Buck, just come stay with us,” Eddie said again.
Buck looked at him like he was crazy. “Where would I sleep?”
“Where are you sleeping here?” Eddie asked, not missing Buck’s guilty glance at the pillows and sheets piled on his couch that answered his question. “I guarantee you my couch is just as comfortable.”
Buck seemed to really consider it for the first time, jaw twitching as he weighed Eddie’s offer but then he shook his head sadly.
“You just feel bad for me, laid up and staying here alone.”
Eddie shrugged. “Is that a bad thing? Caring about you?”
OR
After the ladder truck explosion Buck moves in with Eddie and they both help each other heal in different ways.

Summary
“I’m not there anymore Buck. I’m … I’m in a way better place now, really. But sometimes I think … I never did finish that homework from Frank. And maybe that means I never fully processed what happened over there … and things could get bad again. Then we met Tommy and he said he was an army pilot and I thought hey, this guy might get it. Maybe … maybe I can talk to him.”
Buck’s jaw hung open for a moment.
“You wanted to hang out with Tommy alone to help work through your army trauma,” Buck said eventually, his voice quiet. Eddie nodded in agreement and Buck dropped his face into his hands. “God I’m such an asshole.”

Summary
Eddie turned to Buck, knowing he had played his second trump card of the night. If it was the choice between Eddie and an entire family, it was obvious what choice he was going to make.
Michaels walked away and Eddie strapped on the vest, never hesitating, never questioning whether he should walk into a building full of armed criminals. Not caring that Buck couldn’t go with him. That he might have to stand outside and watch Eddie get shot. Again. That Buck might have to watch him die.
Buck grit his teeth. “I hate you a little for doing this.”
Eddie stopped and hung his head. “Buck, is that really the last thing you want to say to me before I go in there?”

Summary
"Maddie." Eddie’s fear matches her own when they meet each other’s eyes again. “You gotta get out. We don’t have time…”
“I’m not leaving you.”
“What about Jee, Maddie?” Eddie grabs it like the steel frame in his side and jams it straight through her heart. “Who’d you rather leave? Me or her?”
For a moment, she thinks of how simple it would be. How badly she wants to get out. To remove the danger, to remove the possibility of leaving Jee, again, of leaving Chimney again. She could get out of the car. She could survive this.
Some part of her wants to, so bad, but she’s staring at Eddie, and thinking of Buck’s shaking hands after he got shot, thinking of Eddie spinning Christopher at the fire station, thinking of all the things this world has to lose if it loses Eddie Diaz. Thinking of all the things her brother would lose.
Thinking of all the things she would lose.
OR
Eddie and Maddie end up in an impossible situation.

Summary
"Though—and I know you probably don't want to talk about it, but since you and Natalia are over with now, I've been wondering…" Maddie pauses, watches Buck make a face like he's bracing to be smacked. "What happened with Eddie?"
Buck stops wincing and just blinks at her for a second. Then he says, "What?"
"You two were dancing around it for so long, and then… what, it just didn't work out? Was the date really that bad?"
She's expecting another wince, or even for him to duck out of the conversation entirely, but instead Buck is staring at her like she's grown a second head. "Maddie. I've never been on a date with Eddie."
-
Or: the poker game was a date. It takes Buck a while to catch on, though.

Summary
As stupid as it seems now, Eddie always thought they’d have more time.
He should know better. If the bullet wounds that riddle his body weren’t evidence enough, the scarring that he knows twists across Buck’s leg should have been. It wasn’t, though. Despite everything they’d been through, Eddie always thought they’d have enough time.
Now, though, as he opens the door to find Buck already standing in front of it, he knows they’ve finally run out. Eddie draws him into a hug without a second thought. There’s no space left for pretenses.
“I didn’t even knock,” Buck says into his shoulder. Eddie can hear the unsteadiness in his voice and it breaks his heart all over again. None of it was supposed to happen like this.

Summary
He still gets stuck in it sometimes: the absolute silence after the shot, and time so, so still in that endless second when Eddie’s eyes met his. When the air turned cool against the skin of Buck’s face because there was something else, now, something warmer, sticky in his eyelashes, pooling at the corner of his mouth. Staining him in a way that will never, never come out, all in the time it took to remember how to breathe again.
It didn’t happen fast at all. There are days when Buck wakes up and thinks it might still be happening.
And Eddie is—Eddie won’t—Eddie—
