“They talk like I’m some saint for loving her. Like I’m a hero for helping her when she has bad days. Like she’s a burden and I’m with her as an act of charity rather than because I love her.” Finnick’s tone shifted, protective of Annie and mad at anyone who would think so little of her.
“So what’s the truth then?”
“The truth?” Finnick stopped knotting his rope, his eyes staring across space to wherever the hovercraft bringing Annie back to him was. “The truth is that between the two of us, Annie is the sane one.”

She takes a deep breath and nods, still staring right into the camera. She’s still so beautiful, I think to myself, feeling as paralyzed as she appears at the moment. I want more than anything to rescue her from Snow, even if I die in the process. I want more than anything to go back to that last night in the Quarter Quell and never let anyone separate us, never let Beetee and Finnick and Johanna pressure us into splitting up.
I’d do anything to take those last few minutes back. Reverse our positions and put me in the line of fire in the Capitol. Let me take her place, no matter the cost.

This is where she'd normally ask him something like "Where do rats go when they have a cavity?" or "What did the cupcake say to the frosting?" or whatever other dumb fucking jokes kids have to memorize now for entertainment because they've never so much as been in the same room as a TV. And Joel would bitch and moan until she'd rattle one off that was so goddamn stupid he'd laugh into his sleeping bag.
But that's not what she does.
She just says, "They put me in a cage."
