Summary
Shouto was 3 when he became a big brother for the first time. Though the memory is foggy, he clings to the shimmers of that day as tightly as one clings to a raft at sea.
He saw Mama in the white hospital bed, holding two little blankets, one pink, one blue. He called out to her and she smiled with the prettiest smile in the whole world because that's his Mama and she's okay.
(With age though, he realised just how exhausted her smile was, just how dull her eyes were, just how much pain she was in-but through it all, she held Natsuo and Fuyumi safely)
He scrambled up the bed, begging her to let him hold his little siblings. She laughed and said he was too small to hold them, but he could see them.
Their faces were all red and smushy. They had white hair, like Mama and him. They were ugly and gross and silly.
He loved them at first sight.
"I'll protect them, no matter what Mama!"
Everything he has done since that day has been for Natsuo, Fuyumi, Touya and Yukiko. His whole world. His younger siblings.
This is the story of how Shouto Todoroki protected his family... and was saved by his Hero, too.

Summary
Shoto Todoroki often wished that he were a less liminal person, he seemed to always exist in the in-between. He was half and half and it seemed he always would be; fire and ice, red and white, scarred and unscathed, hero and victim, like his mother and like his father. He longed to exist outside of thresholds, to be more definite, to pick a side.
It seemed to him that the world was the opposite, everywhere he looked seemed so definite – so divided, so black and white. The world would never shut up about heroes and villains, good and evil, quirk and quirkless both sides screaming at each other that they are the best, like children in a playground. He would look at himself and wonder if when the time came, he would be able to fall so perfectly into his own role, or if he would trip up and land somewhere in between hero and villain and be stuck there forever, like a piece of waste discarded by heroes and villains alike.
They were not so different in his eyes, he knew first-hand heroes would not hesitate to hurt, to burn, to kill. How are villains any different?
