“You understand why that was wrong, don’t you, Hawks?”
“Yes.”
“Very good. But- ah, ah, ah, I’m not finished with you. Sit back down.”
Hawks complies.
“You might say that you understand, but just to be sure, you’re going to write lines. I want them to say, ‘Good heroes are not reckless endangerments.’ Give me a thousand of them. That should give it time to really sink in.” His handler slides him one of his own red feathers, an inkwell, and a blank notebook across the table, rises from her seat, and exits the room. He turns the single feather in his hand, feeling the motion in his plumage. Hawks enjoys those last moments and the airy pull of the twirl, before the inevitable sharp sting like a blade sinking settles in.
Hawks closes his eyes and inhales. When he reopens them, he is sitting behind his desk. He loosens the silk noose around his neck, grips the pen in his hand, and exhales towards the legal pad face-up on the surface. He begins to write.
