He couldn’t muster the energy to feel even a bit embarrassed by the way he turned in your grasp, the blade clattering forgotten to the floor as his nails scratched at your back, pulling you in closer, trying to crawl under your skin.
“I’ve got you,” your voice came out in a hush. It seemed to him you were saying it more to yourself, an assurance of sorts. But he took solace in the words regardless.

Summary
Floating silently in the beam of light you came face to face—because it was a face, human, almost and defying all reason—with the thing that had pulled you into the depths.
Its eyes that you recognized as understanding were wide, its slit pupils blown and pleading. Its mouth full of predator teeth hung open, a thin rasp audible as a hand with talons for nails and webbing between its fingers reached out in the light for you.
As your head cleared enough for you to listen to it trying to speak, the ungodly burning in your lungs and the darkening edges of your vision caused your body to move on its own.

Dabi exhaled before speaking, little rings of smoke drifting from his parted lips through the hazy bar lighting. “Could’ve what?”
It wasn’t really a question even though he said it like one. Dabi knew. He was there. He was the one who dragged Jin from the scene of his crime—the evidence left hacking in the dust hundreds of roofs away.
“I could have done it.”
Dabi didn’t believe him, even though it was the only small truth Jin had dared to offer about that night. He was right.
He could have, he just—
“So why didn’t you?”

“Do you think we’ll win?”
Magne asked it without really meaning to. The words came with a mind of their own, knowing themselves how desperately she needed the answer. From you. From that tongue that was so sure of itself, there would be no lying.
You didn’t meet her eye when you spoke, but she met yours. Magne watched the living ghost of certainty that some might see and name arrogance possess your eyes turned skyward. And with a confidence that stuck in her bones like radium and glowed with the same surety of your eyes on that first night, you breathed out a response.
“We already have,” you said, setting your cooling cup down on the curb and turning to face her head on. “We won the second we dared to breathe their air and force our names into their mouths. Our existence alone refutes the rules they live by.”

Or, she’s been dead since the beginning, that Magne knows. The only thing she finds she truly regrets though--as Overhaul sends her back to the stardust she came from--is that she can’t recall the last time she kissed you. So, in her final moments, Magne replays all the days leading up to it, and is pleased to find that her story is not the tragedy she always feared it would become.
