Junpei calmly reached over Mahito’s shoulder for the offered hair tie, his unblemished hands brushing against Mahito’s stitched ones. The boy didn’t so much as flinch at the point of contact, despite seeing -despite knowing what Mahito’s touch could do. What it was capable of.
Instead the boy returned back to his task at hand. His mundane, human want to braid Mahito’s hair for him.

“Do you know what a human is to me?” Mahito’s words fill the silence, yet somehow, they also make the pause before Choso’s response feel intense. The momentary quiet is rife with an energy Choso cannot name.
“Toys,” Choso responds with a nod. “Playthings to experiment on and with.”
Mahito exhales amusedly. “Sometimes. Although, I have been known to enjoy the roles being reversed.”Choso is still learning what being a human is. His feelings about where he fits are complicated, but some of his new urges are very human. Thankfully, Mahito is more than happy to help him understand and explore them, if only Choso will let him.

A pair of arms wrapped around their waist from behind, closely followed by a pointy chin boring into their shoulder. Angling their body slightly to the side, they raised an eyebrow at the patchwork face hovering only centimetres away. Mahito grinned back at them. Her protective goggles had been taken off, but shadowy imprints were left behind as tired lines circling her eyes and making the blood-splattered lower half of her face stand out all the more.
“Are you finished yet?” she nagged with a leering expression, slowly leaning closer.
Kenjaku protectively shoved a hand in her face. “Forget it. I’m not kissing you with the test subject’s guts still sticking to your face.”

This aquarium looks nothing like in the film. The stink of humanity intertwines with chlorine and seawater and something else, foreign, which needles Mahito’s curiosity. Behind thick plexiglass panels, suspended between the fake blue light that pours from above and the dull, deep dark that rises from below, shapes float like corpses or plastic bags.
Geto and Mahito go to the aquarium.
