The boat came to a stop, and Polites realised with a start that his pockets were empty, that he had not had to fish coins from his mouth upon arriving. “I’m afraid I have nothing to pay you with, seeing as I was not buried,” he said, trying to keep his balance as he stood. “Perhaps something could be arranged?”
The ferryman did not answer. Or ferrywoman, perhaps—it was impossible to tell under all those robes, that gaping, empty hood. They looked blankly at him, as if expecting something. They had understood him earlier, he thought, so they must have understood this, too.
“I’ll just—” he began, uncertain. He was already dead; he supposed there was not much that could be done to him here. Still, he felt guilty. “I’m sorry, I did not plan to die so soon. I’m sure this isn’t easy work.”

Summary
I knew it had to be done, yet I still hesitated going up to this rooftop. I'm going to leave my entire world behind to keep my siblings safe.
