His mother’s laugh, Giorno had learned, could be mocking, or condescending, sometimes lewd, but never genuine, never happy. He hated how easily the men were fooled by that laugh that so obviously was hollow. How it excited them, had them licking their lips in anticipation. How when she started laughing in their laps, their hands would move from around her waist to grab at her thighs instead, or if they were especially crude, move up inside her blouse, in front of everyone to see.
