Summary
Lupin dreams too big, too early, and swan dives like Icarus off a too high castle wall and hits the water hard. It ensnares him, mingles with red, and he knows he isn’t going to make it. Knows that he’s crawling to death’s door as he scrambles up the muddy bank with spikes in his back and pins and needles itching along his fingers. He’s miscalculated and now he’s going to pay the price.
Until remarkably he doesn’t.
Or, Arsène Lupin the Third doesn’t stay dead and that’s incredibly useful until it’s not

Summary
Jigen could get rid of Lupin—a quick pull of the trigger and a little bit of clean up, before vanishing into the night without a trace, a weakness eliminated—but the cost seems too high, or perhaps the benefits too low. Besides, Lupin’s good company. A bright—albeit slightly insane—spot in an otherwise dismal world. So Jigen dismisses it. Buries that something he’s feeling in loose dirt and doesn’t shoot.
Someone else does it for him.
Or Lupin gets shot and Jigen comes to the horrifying realization that he cares about something

Alma’s eyes slide to the figure standing on the outskirts. Watching as he stumbles along with a bucket on his head and chittering rats along his back and shoulders. She watches and realizes, with a pain like ice, that Bruno is someone she doesn’t know anymore.
Oh, she knows the shape of him, the pattern of him, as any mother would. She recognizes the nose of his father, the slouching of his doubts, the muttering of his stories, but it’s like the afterimage of the sun. A once bright light that’s slowly faded to something else entirely. Leaving a stranger stumbling about in her son's body.

Captain James T. Kirk is not an idiot. He’s impulsive and a flirt and, sure, maybe he’s just a tad more dramatic than the average Starfleet officer, but he’s no idiot. He notices things. Details and patterns that add up to nice solvable answers. Has learned how to choreograph them into steps and dances as he calls out bluffs and saves lives. He knows when things are right and when they are wrong.
He knows, for instance, that there’s something wrong with his crew after the Halkan negotiations.
He notices that Uhura and Bones no longer like to be touched.
Or, Captain Kirk deals with the fallout of Mirror Mirror. Mostly he listens and mostly the others heal.

“It’s time to go, Captain,” and he looks to see Hannibal there next to him, not touching, but close enough that if Murdock wanted to he could. He doesn’t. Not even with the colonel looking so tired and worn out. Not even with that leveled, helpless look that haunts his eyes.
Normal Murdock would. Normal Murdock would try and at least make a joke, but he got lost somewhere between the start of the day and the end, and now all that’s left is this.
Or Murdock leaves Vietnam the second time the same way he left the first.

Or he works two shady jobs for the CIA and never recovers.
Or he hears the phantom screams of soldiers long dead.
Or maybe it’s all of these things or none of these things, but somewhere along the line Murdock goes crazy and everything changes.

There’s so many things he could say to that. Things like, I think I'm losing myself, or does killing make me a bad person, or I can’t fall asleep for more than a few hours at a time because I still haven’t gotten used to sleeping alone, but none of that seems like enough. None of that seems to even begin to give form to his grief.
“Daniel,” and that tone forces him to answer.
“She’s gone,” he decides to go with the root of it all.

It’s like a dream. One of those secret wishes that only he and Petra know about and don’t dare voice. More than that, he’s come back from Mexico with a team. With a colonel and a lieutenant that are strange yet familiar all at once. It’s perfect.
And then there’s the captain.
