Summary
Annabeth understood this the way she understood load-bearing walls and weight distribution. The enmity was structural. It held things up. You did not remove it without understanding what it was holding.
She was twelve years old, and she understood it perfectly, and she was certain she would never have cause to think about it differently.
Then a boy arrived.
He was blonde and blue-eyed and looked like he had lost a fight with a lawnmower, and he was unconscious, and he smelled, unmistakably and impossibly, of the deep ocean.
Annabeth stood in the doorway of the infirmary and looked at him for a long moment. Something in her went very still in the way that things go still right before something large and irreversible happens — the held breath before the earthquake, the instant of silence before a wave breaks.
She did not name the feeling. She was twelve. She was the pride of her mother. She was going to be great.
She turned and walked away.
It would not be the last time she would try.

Annabeth doesn’t know everything. Not how Percy really feels about her, not if Percy’s actually interested in Rachel, not if Percy’s suffering as much as she is from their distance, and definitely not whether Percy even knows her anymore.
Basically, Annabeth feels like she doesn’t know her own best friend—are they, still?—at all.
But it’s winter break, their friends are itching for an evening out, and some confessions slip out on the ice.
“I don’t want to fight,” he told her.
Her heart lurched in her chest.
“It’s not my business who you talk to. I just… I’ve missed you.” His voice faded into a low, strained whisper.
She wanted to tell him she missed him, too. More than she’d ever be able to express.

“Is this okay?” He let the pads of his fingertips brush her side. Her shiver came again and his worry heightened.
“Yes,” Annabeth said.
Percy flattened his hand on her waist. He relished the immediate warmth that seeped from beneath her shirt. In case she felt cold again, he moved his hand downward and up again in hopes that it could warm her up more.
Annabeth let out a low sigh and burrowed backwards into his front. His hand slipped down until his fingers were pressing into her tummy. She didn’t say anything or undo her move. In fact, her breathing started to slow.
