No more war, no flowers, no wedding, no parents, no Pete; and to top it all off Kerry Johnson – Agent Kerry Johnson, with her skinny blue jeans and her curly hair and her blinding white smile and her insidious bowl of salad – all in the space of a couple of weeks.

Where was he, anyway? He said he’d be here. Had something come up? Was there an emergency? Or wasn’t he interested in coming to begin with? He wouldn’t stand her up, would he? Would he? She knew she shouldn’t have allowed the whole thing to drift all the way to Christmas Eve, for there had always been a tacit understanding (more or less enforced by a few sharp words and a lot of sudden disappearances to Minnesota) that he was not to be disturbed on the 25th of December except on government business. But the 24th…?

General Jack O’neill stands with his hands in his pockets, rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet and looking very much as though he doesn’t quite know what to do with himself. There is nobody to witness his discomfort; the room is empty save for him and the dying man, whose eyes are closed. Then Jacob turns his head and his eyelids drift open, and Jack feels as if those dark, inscrutable eyes are pinning him to the wall.
