After Detective Benson goes missing in 2013, Donald Cragen confides in his (current) second favorite detective: Fin. Cragen has the key to calling in Stabler, but isn't sure he wants to set off that bomb yet. Fin has thoughts. Canon-compliant up to SVU 24.19 and OC 3.19, but IDK beyond that because they haven't happened yet. Covers moments from 2013-May 2023.
(answers the question: how did Fin contact Stabler for the award anyway?) (also answers the unasked questions like: what did Huang think after Stabler left? and: why aren't Fin and Jet BFFs? and: did Cragen encourage Fin to be a gossip [yes])
“You know,” Fin said after a too-long silence, his voice low, his heart in his throat, “to set off a nuke, there’s two sets of codes.”
Cragen tapped his fingers on the desk a few times, then fidgeted with the edge of the chip bag. “Two metaphorical keys. Both have to turn to move forward.”
“No one can make a decision like that alone. Can’t be the only one responsible.” Olivia needed Cragen to lead the charge in finding her. Cragen needed someone to share the load. Fin could do that much.
