Summary
Given away at birth, Ashlyn Doe had been through twelve foster homes by the time she moved in with the wealthy Howard family at age eleven.
Her first week went well. Maria treated her genuinely well, giving her space, letting her decorate her room, and taking her out for a girls' day. David mostly avoided her until late one night during her second week, when he crept into her room. To protect Maria, Ashlyn chose to endure it, as she always had.
Five years later, the family—including two older twin brothers and a cousin—wants to adopt her. Though she now has a real family, years of trauma make it hard to trust them or sleep through the night. Still, deep down, part of her hopes she can finally open up and be happy without paying a terrible price.
