Summary
“If I had,” Chris lingers on the words, watching Eddie intently through the screen, “If I had conditions?”
Eddie feels his stomach knot up. It’s the first time Chris has ever alluded to a willingness to come home. Usually he just shoots Eddie down with a flat “I know” before hurrying off the call. Eddie Diaz will be damned before he lets this chance slip through his hands.
“Anything,” his voice rings with desperation in his own ears, “Whatever you need to feel ready to come home. If I can make it happen, I will.”
Chris eyes him, young face serious as a judge presiding over trial. An apt comparison because only Chris could condemn or parole Eddie. His fate is in his son’s hands so completely that if he was going to therapy, Frank would probably be concerned. Finally, Chris opens his mouth and says something so earth shattering as to crack the foundations of his father’s mind.
“Marry Buck,” Chris says firmly.

Summary
chris overhears a phone call between eddie and buck and learns so much about his dad, his mom, and his grandparents.
“I can still hear the flatline on the heart monitor when I think about it. For days after it happened, the flatline was echoing in my ears. I couldn’t escape it.”
Dad sniffles and Chris’ heart breaks. He really, really should not be listening to this.
“It wasn’t until I was in the ambulance with you, after the ladder truck, that it stopped. Your heart monitor was beeping and the entire time I thought it was going to stop. I had my thumb on your pulse the whole ride.” Dad laughs sadly. “Yeah, we were holding hands, Buck.”

“You know,” Bobby said, looking thoughtful, “I might have a solution for you. There’s a childcare center near here called Save the Day. They aren’t open overnight, of course, but they are open until 9 with the option to stay a bit late if a shift runs long.”
Eddie stared at Bobby in wonder. “Holy shit. I should have told you about Chris during my interview for the station, that’s perfect! Wait– How much does it cost? I know childcare isn’t exactly cheap, and LA is already kind of expensive–”
“Everyone at the 118 gets a discount. Perks of having an in at the daycare.”

Summary
In that moment, Chris understood that his dad was like an onion; he couldn’t help but remember that comparison from Shrek, about how ogres have layers. In this case, it was his dad who had layers, and who had been hiding behind them just to make sure he was happy.
The only time he had truly seen his father's heart (still going with the onion metaphor) had been when he was with Buck.
When the three of them were together.
That was when reality hit him. His eyes widened again; if he thought he had already understood everything about his father and the world around him, he couldn't have been more wrong.
"Oh my God," Chris gasped. "Dad's in love with Buck, but he doesn’t realize it."
"I knew I should still keep my hopes up with you, Chris," Adriana said, smiling proudly. "I knew I could count on you."
