It happens a year after they adopt Marcy.
Yunan doesn’t know what, exactly, she was expecting when she opened the door to the apartment. She doesn’t really get many visitors; Olivia’s moms had visited at one point, and Yunan’s had some colleagues over after moving all of her sponsorship meetings to virtual-only. Not nearly enough to warrant being unsurprised by a visit, though, and seeing how it’s the middle of the day on a sunny June Wednesday, she doesn’t know what to expect.
Well. Certainly not a teenager, hair tied in a ponytail and bleached at the tips, eyes downcast and guilt-ridden.

After a few turns, she speaks again. "How was the mall? Your father tells me old frog turned green."
Anne bit her lip and tried to find a good answer to that. It'd... sort of been a success? But also it really hadn't. "I missed food court smell," she settled on. "And I saw Gabby. So it was good."
"It's good to hear you're hanging out with your friends," Mom hums, but Anne sees the worry etching its way across her face. "What did you tell her?"

“It’s not safe,” Marcy whispers, her voice as shaky as her body. She glances down at herself, and then up at the looming figure of The Night, and then shudders. “It’s not safe,” she repeats, and the tears welling in her eyes fall, making a crystalline path down her face.
“We can make it safe,” Anne promises, and she forces her way forwards, lunging for Marcy’s hands. Her fingers are obscured by the gloves, but what skin shows is obscenely pale and thin; she looks malnourished, emaciated. Did The Night let her eat? “We can take you home, Marcy, and everything will be…” not fine, she doesn’t think things will be fine ever again, but maybe…”you’ll be okay, everything is gonna be okay.”
Everything is not okay.
