Jay hauled himself up, duffel swinging from one hand, and nudged Carlos with his knee. “C’mon. If we’re late, they’ll just find a way to make it worse.”
Carlos nodded, the color drained from his face, and stumbled after Jay. Delphine followed, eyes flicking back and forth between the adults and the horizon.
Mal and Evie trailed behind, side by side.
“Do you think it’s safe?” Evie hissed.
Mal rolled her eyes. “If it was, they wouldn’t send us.”
The next half hour was a blur: stuffing every useful thing into torn backpacks, swapping whispered curses and half-jokes, and pretending they didn’t care about what they left behind. Jay argued with Carlos about whether to pack the soldering iron or the wire cutters; Evie tried to wedge a stack of hair ribbons into the smallest possible space; Delphine scavenged every edible in the flat before sealing it in Ziplocs.
