Summary
Tim's been putting his life back together for a year since his brother... died, he thinks, is the word he'll use. He's put life's pieces back together into a shape he barely recognises, swapping his old life in publishing for chasing leads alongside his fellow researchers, Sasha James and Jonathon Sims, both sharp, brilliant, and stunning. It's been a year of doing what he has to, doing what he can, to tease out information, follow up cases, and make some torturous progress towards understanding what even happened, when suddenly, Jon Sims does what he's never done before, and clocks out early.
What begins as a curiosity spirals into dread, and Tim has to know what's happened to Jon. He expects the worst.
Despite the trajectory of his life so far, Tim should set his expectations a little higher, every now and again.

“A demonstration?” Jon asks, and the words come out very level, very careful. He’s still frozen in the same position, like he’s afraid he might spook off a bird that’s miraculously landed on him by moving.
Tim opens his mouth to reply, but only manages it on the second try.
“Yeah,” he says. “Hands on, you know. Let you get to see the thing for yourself.”
“And you would be tying up…” Jon says, trailing off into a silence that begs to be filled, answered.
“You,” Tim confirms, and he thinks he sees Jon shiver as he says it. “I couldn’t-- can’t tie myself up, after all.”
“But I can’t-- I don’t do that,” Jon says, as if remembering himself. He almost sounds disappointed. “I don’t-- I don’t enjoy sex. I’m very certain of that much, I made sure. I can’t--”
“Who said anything about sex?”
