Summary
Marc and Frank hadn’t spoken for years after Marc got discharged. That was the way it went, most of the time. You went over with a bunch of guys, you shared the worst days of your lives, you watched as friends died, and then you went home to separate lives and separate families in separate states and never talked about the bloodshed or the passionate nights alone in tents to distract from it. Then, years later on a particularly hard anniversary, Marc Spector appeared on Frank’s doorstep. A few too many beers in and they were right where they’d left it years ago, except this time they weren’t deprived of sleep and going through hell day in and day out. Marc had practically moved in after that, because they were both so alone and they understood each other in a way no one else could hope to. Their long silences, just existing in the same space, had been too much for everyone else but worked perfectly for them. They knew when a nightmare needed to be left alone and when a flashback needed to be dealt with.

“Joaquin, there’s a—” Sam cut off and took off running towards the crying infant laying on a cracked step towards the back of the room. He’d seen a hell of a lot on missions, but nothing that tugged at his heart quite like this. “There’s a baby here. Poor thing, they probably left her behind when they moved operations.”
“Do you see any sort of id? Any identifying markers at all?” Joaquin spoke into his comms, typing fast to scan every missing person’s report within the last weeks.
“No, nothing. She’s got a birthmark on her chin, that’s it. I think that’s a scar under her eye, too?” Sam spoke quickly, trying to check if the little girl was hurt. She was so small, maybe four months if his memories of his nephews were any indication.
“She can’t stay here. It’s freezing cold and she only has a blanket.” He scooped up the baby, holding her close, trying to warm her up through the kevlar of his suit. Her tiny hands moved to clutch at the star on his chest. “I’m taking her back home. We can go from there.”
“Sam, are you sure you wanna—?”
“I’m not leaving her here. She’s a baby, Joaquin.”——
