    “I’m Ellie.” She smiles, and he can see more gaps than teeth. “I’m six. What’s your name?” He sighs, he wants the kid to go, but he doesn’t want to be an asshole.

    “Joel.”

    “And how old are you?” He knows he’s not going to get anything done until the kid doesn’t get all her answers, so he decides to sit down, giving his back a little break.

    “Twenty-eight.” Ellie nods, taking that information in.

    “Okay. See? Now we are not strangers.” He can’t help but let out a soft chuckle.

    “If you say so, kid.”

    Tucked away inside Ellie’s backpack was something special to her. Much more precious than any savage starlight comic or joke book. It was by far the most important thing she has. And that thing was a stuffed giraffe that she had had for as long as she could remember. She always kept it tucked away safely inside her backpack and took it with her everywhere she went. She would never let anyone see that she still had it with her, afraid she would be made fun of or be berated for carrying around such a childish thing. So she kept it hidden away from anyone who could, especially her new found traveling buddy, Joel

     

    TLDR: Ellie has this stuffed giraffe she carries with her everywhere, so when the toy gets destroyed, she’s upset but tries to hide it
