    Jayce had been single for the last five years since his last partner moved away. She had trouble dealing with Viktor, said something about his boy ‘being jealous’, and that there ‘wasn’t enough of Jayce to go around’. That was also ridiculous, because Viktor had been ill from birth and required more attention to meet his doctors appointments and treatment plans. The commitment that Jayce had made to adopt Viktor when he was eight wasn’t going to change just because of what his ex had wanted.

    His family of two had been through hell and back. Jayce didn’t think there was anything that could tear them apart, and there was nothing that he would change about Viktor.

    And yet, the closer Viktor got to his presentation, the more agitated they both were. Jayce’s hind brain screamed that this was entirely wrong.

    Viktor had outdone himself. Jayce was set to deliver his sermon this afternoon, and Viktor had picked the perfect spot to drink up his words—in the pulpit, of course. Where else could he get so close to God? Besides, Jayce had been ignoring him for too long, and he was starving. His hunger only increased by the day now, it had been so long since he last fed on essence. If he did not feed soon, Viktor feared he would become… undignified with desperation.

    Viktor folded himself into the shadows so Jayce wouldn’t be able to see him yet. He had to bite his lip when a heavy boot stepped into the pulpit. The things he wished to do with that boot. So many centuries and still, the smallest things gave him a thrill.

    Jayce cleared his throat. Viktor’s eyes locked onto the bulge of Jayce’s crotch.

    “Thank you all for being here this afternoon. Our community means so much to us…”

    Viktor wakes with a start, gasping for air as if he’s drowning. Phantom sensations of gills have him clawing at his neck, scratching the skin to prove to his panicking mind that he is, in fact, not part fish. When his breathing evens out, the only sound that remains is the gentle burbling of the aquarium and the softest song that has ever graced his ears.

    The unfamiliar tune is a lilting melody, rhythmic and enchanting. No words accompany the song, but he understands their meaning: come hither.

    Viktor didn’t mean to get so close to Jayce’s den, but really, he was just so worried for his partner. How could a bear possibly sleep for so long and not feed themselves? Surely they still had to wake for water, and the habits that came after. Not to mention that hibernating creatures would miss the holiday season, and the passing of the new year. How could Viktor even consider Sky’s warnings as something to follow?

    “Oh, Viktor,” Sky, the otter vastaya, had said with a patronising pout. “You shouldn’t disturb Jayce’s hibernation. You know what they say about poking bears, right? If his rest was disturbed, imagine what he would do.”

    To you, were the unspoken words, dangling between them.

    But Jayce wouldn’t hurt Viktor—would he?
