The silence on the other end sharpens.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Buck snaps.
Eddie flinches. “Nothing. I—”
“No, come on, say it. What does that mean, Eddie?” Buck pushes, voice rising.
He feels trapped, like the walls are closing in, like he’s been backed into a corner with no way out. His palms feel sweaty, chest rising and falling too fast, too shallow, like there’s not enough air in the room.
He’s angry.
He’s hurt.
He’s confused.
He’s jealous.It’s too much all at once, emotion piling on top of emotion with nowhere to go.
And it keeps coming.
And. And. And.
His body is trembling under the weight of everything he can’t say, everything he didn’t know until now.
“I’m just saying,” Eddie starts, “it’s only been a couple of weeks and now you’re fucking Tommy Kinard in my bedroom—”
“It’s not your bedroom anymore,” Buck cuts in, his voice sharp. “You made sure of that, when you left.”

Eddie nods, squeezing his eyes shut. “Yeah, I know. I’m…” He sniffs. Buck continues rubbing circles into Eddie’s back with his other hand. He peels his eyes open slowly, making direct eye contact as he says, “I’m terrible, huh?”
Buck sucks in a breath. He knows what this is. “Really? You're insatiable.”
“I know. I'm awful. The worst.” He frowns again, but this time Buck knows it's for show—can recognize this play anywhere. “Not like you. You’re perfect.”
Eddie Diaz is complicated. Eddie Diaz is deeply ashamed. Neither facts deter Buck.

Summary
Eddie roves his eyes over Buck's form. The paleness of his skin, the starkness of his veins under. The way Buck's clothes are starting to hang a little loose on him, the way he never changes where anyone can see him anymore.
Buck just sighs and looks away, breathing measured. It makes Eddie all the more certain that he’s doing the right thing; if Buck really was okay, he would have had the energy to fight back.
It breaks something in Eddie. Almost as quickly as it rose, his anger burns away, leaving behind only pain and fear. He can't lose Buck. He can't.
Buck would do anything to protect Eddie. Even if it means keeping the truth hidden — right to an early grave.
