Summary
Los Angeles, 1926. Vivian is twenty-two years old. She has been in Hollywood for two years, and she has nothing to show for it. She works as an extra, a stand-in, a nobody. She lives in a cramped apartment with three other girls. She eats beans and rice. She sends money home to her mother. She auditions for every role she can find, but she never gets a callback. She is beautiful, but so is everyone else. She is talented, but so is everyone else. She is beginning to lose hope. She thinks about her grandmother, who was an Assassin. She taught Vivian the Creed: nothing is true, everything is permitted. She taught her to fight, to hide, and to protect the innocent. Vivian has a hidden blade in her dressing room. She has never used it. But she keeps it, a reminder that she is not as powerless as she seems.
