She barely remembered the Keramzin orphanage she had spent two years before being taken to the Little Palace. There, she had been made Grisha. She had uncovered the flame that burned inside her, had learned to control it, turning the tumult of emotion that constantly raged in her chest into living fire.
Her teachers had all marveled at her strength, her skill, her determination. All except Baghra of course. She marveled at nothing, but Alina did receive fewer disapproving sniffs than most of her peers. Alina did receive the most whacks of the old woman’s cane as she pushed one of her most promising pupils harder and harder, ever-demanding perfection.
None of Alina’s potential or realized power mattered. Three days after being stationed along the Ravka-Shu Han border, she was captured.
