They arrive in the capital in the late afternoon, with the orange light of the sunset reflecting in the waters of the pier, the noises of twilight movements in the city, the smell of salt and chimneys spitting smoke, the bumpy alleys, the lamplighters lighting the poles for when night falls. It's all so familiar (...) maybe she's twenty-two years old again and will have to wake up early tomorrow for her servitude duties. Or maybe she's nineteen, begging her father to recognize her talent for the royal guard. Maybe she’s fifteen, dreaming of meeting distant lands and rescuing princesses. Maybe she's twelve, training every day with her first and dear sword. Maybe she's nine, playing through the eastern streets of the city, looking for insects among the cobblestones.
Maybe she still has Rapunzel with her.
Cassandra returns to Corona after twenty years.

Two months after Cassandra steals the Moonstone and Rapunzel is named temporary Queen of Corona, an ancient magical hourglass sends Rapunzel six years into the past. There, she finds an eighteen-year-old Cassandra, brilliant, guarded, and fighting for a future that the kingdom has already decided she doesn’t deserve.
As Rapunzel experiences life inside the same systems that constrained Cassandra, she’s forced to confront her own blindness, her unearned freedoms, and the ways good intentions intention don’t prevent harm. And in seeing Cassandra clearly for the first time, Rapunzel begins to realize that what she’s been grieving may never have been just friendship.

Rapunzel sits across from her at the table, and Cassandra reluctantly uncovers her injured hand, trying not to grimace at the sickly-sweet smell of the infection she's been fighting off for a month now.
She doesn't look at Rapunzel's face, and she certainly doesn't feel vindicated when she hears her dismayed intake of breath.
"Cassandra—"
"I thought we were done talking about it, Rapunzel."
"I'm so sorry!"
Cassandra looks at her, then, stony.
"That's a new one."
"What?" Rapunzel is near tears.
"'Sorry.'"
