    Following the death of the Lord Archibald Featherington, his cousin, an old, ugly, grouchy man who had no qualms sending his insolent son off to the Americas becomes the new Baron. Eager to free himself of the burden of his cousin’s wife and daughters he sets about arranging a marriage for the eldest daughter with an old friend, paying the dowry for the second-born daughter and declaring their mother their burden as he saw them wed. The youngest daughter was trickier, he had no more friends in want of a wife and the chit was dowdy and a little young to be sure. When he hears his former neighbour is looking for a governess for their only daughter, he writes his young and intelligent cousin references and sends her off to start a new life. When the 1814 social season begins, and one Eloise Bridgerton tries to call on her friend she is informed that Miss Penelope has moved on and the Bridgerton family have never seen nor heard from their friend since. That is, until 8 years have passed, and the Lady Kathani Bridgerton is in search of a governess for her young daughter.

    “Do not mind your Auntie Eloise,” Colin said lightly, and Pen’s heart thrummed in her chest as he rushed in and scooped Augie from his sister’s inept grasp. “She’s too busy reading to notice anything else, as usual.”

    Penelope’s breath caught as Colin’s voice shifted, softening, lifting a note as he spoke to the baby. She stood next to him as he arranged Augie’s bum to rest on his right arm, against his side, his back supported securely with his other hand.

    It's 1814, and instead of arriving with the rest of the ton before the Hearts and Flowers Ball, Penelope tags along with the Bridgertons and Sharmas a few days early. Before the Bridgertons' annual game of Pall Mall, Penelope meets little Augie Basset…and sees Colin hold a baby for the first time. Something inside of her ignites, and suddenly she desperately needs to know precisely how babies are made so she can acquire one of her own.

    Colin, despite his recent visit to Marina and questioning of his own future plans for children, is more than happy to help.

    “I know that a man is supposed to - to insert himself,” she murmurs, hardly believing she has the audacity. “And sow his seed within his wife.” She bites her lip. “But I do not know what that truly means .”

    Colin faces straight ahead, his lips rolled between his teeth as if he is fighting a smile.

    Penelope feels frustration fizz through her. “Do not laugh at me, Colin Bridgerton,” she hisses under her breath. “It is not my fault such things are kept from young ladies.” Her eyes narrow at him. “I am sure you know all about it.”

    “Are you insinuating I am a rake, Penelope?”
