Then Jack sniffs, and his eyes blink open, slow and sleepy. It takes him a moment to focus on Vil, and then a second longer to see him—Vil can tell the second he does because he inhales, ragged, and sits bolt upright, the covers falling down to his waist. “What—what are you doing in here?”
He blinks, shaking his head slightly, and asks, voice a rasp, “What are you WEARING?”

Kalim says look, a butterfly, and you turn your head warily, searching, so you can keep a respectful distance from it, but he throws his little hands out and says, “Don’t move, you’ll scare it!”
You freeze; as his hands reach toward you, your blood goes ice cold despite the high afternoon sun. A dread, alien chill settles in your little bones like nothing you've ever felt before, and out of the corner of your eye you sense the drowsy fanning of the butterfly’s wings.
It's perched in your hair, directly over your left ear.
