Summary
“You’re holding back,” Gawain said as they sparred, the staccato clangs ringing out across the courtyard. “You’ll have to put more into it, if you want to become a Rider.” His gaze sharpened. “That’s what you want, isn’t it?”
“I’m a boy from a village not even important enough for a name,” Zelgius said, parrying. “I couldn’t.”
“Why shouldn’t you get what you want?” Gawain said, pressing on. His blows rattled Zelgius’s bones. “As long as you’re willing to hurt for it.”
“And Ashnard?” Zelgius had heard the rumors that Ashnard was not so married to hierarchy as his predecessors. He didn’t know if he believed them. He would look out of place next to Gawain or Lanvega.
The line of Gawain’s mouth thinned. With a swift swing, he disarmed Zelgius completely. “As long as you’re willing to hurt.”
